Trump Calls for Border Wall at State of the Union Address

Border Wall

President Trump gave his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening, in front of lawmakers and other high-profile guests in the House Chamber. Trump focused on issues of national importance, including bipartisan collaboration, employment, and immigration. A sizable portion of his speech was dedicated solely to illegal immigration problems and the benefits that a border wall will bring.

America is Winning Thanks to New Policy

Trump developed his campaign on a promise to make America great again. He took time to point out the huge improvements made under his administration.

  • 3 million new jobs have been created since his time in office, including 600,000 manufacturing jobs.
  • Unemployment is now the lowest it has been in 50 years.
  • The United States is now the largest Oil and Gas producer.
  • Women have filled more than 50% of new jobs created.
  • January job creation was double that of expectation, despite the government shutdown.

Trump used the successes of his policies to call for a better working relationship between Democrats and Republicans, saying that “together we can break decades of political stalemate.”

Trump Criticizes Partisan Investigations

Notable in his speech, President Trump alluded to the ongoing Mueller probe. Trump told the House Chamber that there needs to be an end to foolish wars, politics, and “ridiculous partisan investigations”. The President said that “If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation.”

Appeal for Border Wall Support

President Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion in border wall funding was the sticking point that led to the recent government shutdown. In his State of the Union address, he called on lawmakers to pass a spending bill that includes border wall funding. He told attendees that the government can put the criminals, cartel, and human traffickers “out of business.”

Trump used San Diego and El Paso, previous hot spots of illegal migrant entry, as examples that have benefitted from fortified border installations.

Congress has until February 15th to create a new spending plan to keep the government open. Trump told lawmakers that “Simply put, walls work, and walls save lives. Let’s work together, compromise, and reach a deal that will truly make America safe.”

Of course, the State of the Union does not always reflect the inner workings of the government, and the upcoming February 15th deadline will either make or break much of what Trump had to say in his address on Tuesday.
