Trump Reportedly Convinced to Avoid Shutdown

President Trump

Despite President Trump saying recently that he would be “proud” to shutdown the government, it looks increasingly likely that top members of the Republican party have convinced him otherwise. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the government would stay open throughout the current funding period, and that the executive branch would be “flexible” on its demands for border wall funding.

The news will come as a relief to employees of the Justice Department, National Parks, and other key federal departments that would be affected by a shutdown.

Mitch McConnell Says Shutdown is ‘Not a Good Idea’

Senator McConnell eased tensions for federal employees when he said this week that he doesn’t think a shutdown will occur. When asked by reporters whether the government would indeed shutdown as hinted by President Trump, McConnell said that “He can speak for himself. But I think a government shutdown is not a good idea. That’s my view. The American people don’t like it.”

When pressed to answer the question of whether he thinks a shutdown can now be averted, he told the press: “Yeah, I do.”

Tensions have been high this month, following a televised meeting between President Trump and Democratic leaders. Dialogue between Trump, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer became heated in the White House. The President ended the conversation by indicating that a shutdown would occur if funding wasn’t made available for a border wall and other security improvements.

President Trump hasn’t yet commented on whether he has reached an agreement with his own party or Democratic leaders. When asked by reporters if he would be willing to sign a proposal for a temporary spending bill, he simply replied with “We’ll see what happens.”

Despite Trump remaining tight lipped on the issue, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders admitted this week that Trump would likely accept a compromise if it means keeping the government open.

President Trump Will Still Fight for Border Wall Funding

Even if the President doesn’t receive the funding he needs in 2018, he will continue to push for a border wall throughout the rest of his term. The challenge in 2019 will be the fact that Democrats will control the majority of votes in the House of Representatives.

Today, it looks increasingly likely that Trump will receive between $1.3 and $1.6 billion to make border improvements. Up to $5 billion of funding has been requested. Congress will need to finalize a spending bill this week to avoid a shutdown.
