Trump Administration Softens Stance on Vaping

Trump

President Trump called for a sweeping ban on vape products in 2019, saying that the cigarette alternatives were responsible for a teen vaping crisis. Three months after the President pledged to ban all flavored vape products, a softer partial-ban has been revealed by Washington insiders.

It’s good news for the vape industry and anybody who is invested in it. A less extreme approach to vaping could also benefit Trump in his 2020 campaign for reelection.

What Changed Trump’s Mind on Vape Products?

In September, President Trump said of vaping that “We can’t allow people to get sick and we can’t have our youth be so affected. People are dying.” He also revealed that U.S. First Lady Melania Trump was particularly worried about the issue, with the two having a teenager of their own. He said that “Children have died, people have died. And we’re going to have some very strong rules and regulations.”

It was initially reported that Trump, through the FDA, would ban all flavored vape products, including mint and menthol.

However, a sweeping ban would be deeply unpopular with Trump’s base. People use vape products as cigarette alternatives, due to fewer perceived health risks. There are non-vapers that would see a sweeping ban as overbearing. Some could also perceive it to be a sign of favoritism for the tobacco industry, which also markets flavored menthol and mint products.

Trump’s conservative allies and advisors reportedly warned the President against a total ban ahead of the 2020 election.

What the New Rules Mean for Producers and Consumers

President Trump hasn’t completely reversed his stance, but he has reached a compromise somewhere between total freedom and a total ban. The FDA will ban the sale of fruity flavors in cartridge e-cigarettes. Brands like Juul will no longer be able to sell pod systems that appeal to teenagers.

However, the ban will not apply to tank systems which are user-refillable. People will still be able to purchase e-juices (flavored nicotine juices) and mix them freely in their systems. These systems are unpopular with teenagers.

The FDA is expected to make a full public announcement of the ban on Friday.

Is This the Right Compromise?

It is estimated that over 60% of teenagers who vape use fruit flavored products. By banning the sale of fruit-flavored pods, the government could significantly reduce the number of teen vapers.

Trump was always in a difficult position on this issue. The compromise displays a measured approach that helps to improve public safety without alienating adults who seek cigarette alternatives.
