Troops on the Southern Border Home by Christmas

5,800 American troops who were sent to reinforce the U.S. southern border prior to the midterms will start to return home this week. According to Army Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, all troops that were deployed will be home by the Christmas holiday.

Troops were deployed to protect the border against a migrant caravan that was described as an “invasion” force by President Donald Trump.

General Says Troops Will Start Heading Home in the Coming Days

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan said in an interview on Monday that troops would start returning as early as this week, with all recently deployed troops arriving home before Christmas. He told Politico news that “Our end date right now is 15 December, and I’ve got no indications from anybody that we’ll go beyond that.”

The deployment of the troops was unusual when it was announced just a few weeks ago. The number of troops was surprising for some analysts, and the fact that they were sourced from active military units was also unexpected. Traditionally, military forces used to improve border security have come from the National Guard.

Despite mainstream coverage, most troops deployed were not in armed combat units. Instead, they came from logistics and engineering units and had the task of erecting barriers and installing other border defenses.

Widely unreported was the fact that top military officials rejected the idea of deploying a large armed force to secure the border. This request was apparently made by the Department of Homeland Security. Buchanan said on Monday that the deployment was a “law enforcement task”, and that the “secretary of Defense does not have the authority to approve that [deployment of combat units] inside the homeland.”

Currently, just over 1,100 armed marines are assisting border control personnel with security.

Tijuana Could Swell With 10,000 Migrants

With the border newly fortified, 3,000 migrants from the caravan have now arrived in Tijuana Mexico, right next to the border along California. That number could swell to 10,000 within the coming days. Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum said this week that the city is unprepared to deal with the migrants and called the influx an “avalanche”. Protests have erupted in Tijuana with residents unhappy about the migrant presence.

At this stage, very few from the caravan are likely to be granted admission to the U.S., and Mayor Gastelum believes that migrants could be present for up to six months while attempting to file asylum claims with American authorities at the official port of entry.

U.S. officials have indicated that border control agents and remaining troops are prepared to close the border if the situation escalates.
