President Trump hosted lawmakers and other top officials from the government on Wednesday, hoping to reach an agreement on border wall funding and an end to the current shutdown. These hopes were dashed when Democratic attendees remained unwilling to compromise with the President.
This leaves the shutdown as a major political problem as a new Congress is sworn in.
Nancy Pelosi says Democrats will give ‘Nothing’ for a Border Wall
The meeting reportedly begun with a presentation about border security issues, before it devolved into what some media outlets have described as a “raucous” match of rhetoric and finger pointing. The opposing viewpoints of Democrats and Republicans mean that the shutdown will probably continue through this week and into the next.
Despite neither side willing to budge, President Trump has invited lawmakers to meet with him again on Friday. Before then, the House of Representatives will submit a bill that includes funds for government departments and $1.3 billion for border security.
Nancy Pelosi, the incoming Speaker of the House of Representatives, told NBC that her party would give “nothing for the wall,” and reiterated that the $1.3 billion they were offering would only be for “border security”.
When pressed by interviewer Savannah Guthrie, Pelosi said that “We can go through this all back and forth… no. How many times can we say no? Nothing for the wall.”
A bill passed by Democrats in the House will not receive any support in the Senate, where the majority of votes are controlled by Republicans.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said this week that “The Senate will be glad to vote on a measure that the House passes that the President will sign. But we’re not going to vote on anything else.” McConnel stated that the division over funding could last for “days” or “weeks”, which will not be good news for federal employees, the public, or President Trump.
Trump’s Messaging Clearly Lays Blame on Democrats
The President said this week that “$5.6 billion is such a small number,” and that “we are in a shutdown because Democrats refuse to fund border security.”
The fallout from this shutdown will be damaging for all parties concerned. With no agreement yet made, 380,000 Federal employees are currently furloughed, while 420,000 will continue working without pay.
